a history of
Annville
Annville’s history, compiled by the Friends of Old Annville, begins with Native American hunting grounds before Scotch-Irish tenants and later German immigrants settled the area. Founded in 1762, the town grew with contributions from early leaders and remained largely German-speaking until the mid-1800s. Transportation advances—the turnpike, railroad, and trolleys—spurred industry in textiles, bakeries, shoes, and quarrying. Lebanon Valley College, established in 1866 as Pennsylvania’s first co-ed college, became a community hub, while churches shaped spiritual life. More recently, projects like the 1995 reopening of The Allen Theater and 2000s streetscape upgrades have preserved Annville’s heritage while driving renewal.
